The Irish start the season with a 23-12 win over Purdue.
After Saturday’s 23-12 victory, the Irish are now 1-0. The defense looked a lot better than last year, although they did still let Purdue QB Robert Marve put up some good numbers. Dayne Crist looked comfortable starting his first game for the team. He wasn’t asked to do anything extraordinary, but made good decisions and looked poised. If he continues that he should have a good year as the playbook gradually expands. The running game took a lot of pressure off of Crist, which certainly helped him settle in. This sets up a huge game next Saturday at home against Michigan, who looked dominant at home against Uconn winning 30-10. Sophomore Denard Robinson, replacing Tate Forcier, the hero of last year’s ND-Michigan game, seems a perfect fit for Rich Rodriguez’s offense. It will certainly be a large test for the defense. The first few weeks here have seen gorgeous weather, typically around 80 and sunny. However, the last few days, including Saturday, have been a painful reminder to me and other East Coast students that the Midwest is a wind tunnel. The wind makes 75 degree days feel like 60. A friend said to me today, “You know this is probably one of the last times you’ll wear a T-shirt and shorts” and he’s right. The wind is just impossible to stand without heavier clothing, yet there’s an inclination to hold onto just a bit of summer by dressing like you’re going to the beach. Another thing I’d like to mention is the tension between the South Bend Police Department and Notre Dame students. Over the first few weeks the SBPD has broken up a few off-campus parties and at times arrested students. There are reports that a student was Tasered. All of this has led to a lot of debate on campus about whether the police should be paying so much attention to college parties. Some students feel that the police should be spending their time on more serious matters, and some feel that students who drink illegally deserve whatever they get. Sometime in the next day or two (likely tomorrow) I will put up a post discussing the issue and maybe add a few opinions from fellow students. The reason I’ll be writing about the police tension is because right now it is one of the main issues on campus, and I’d like this blog to show what’s going on on campus. I think I would be wrong to ignore a topic just because it is somewhat controversial. |
