For the first time, this past summer the Notre Dame Club of Boston sponsored seven Summer Service Learning Programs (SSLPs) in the local communities.
ND student Stephanie Gharakhanian ’07 served at My Brother’s Keeper. Thanks to ND alumnus Erich Miller, who coordinated her project at My Brother’s Keeper and special thanks go to alumna Janet Seidl and her family who generously housed Stephanie throughout her project. Local ND student Greg Speidel’10 served at the Colonel Marr Boys& Girls Club in Dorchester. Thanks go to Mike Joyce at Colonel Marr who has partnered with the Club to sponsor many Projects over the years. Thanks also to alum Steve Senna for his Generosity towards the students. This year the program was greatly expanded in the Lawrence area thanks to the incredible generosity and work of many area alumni, including Ted Gorrie, Jim and Kathleen Klauer, Jim Mills, Jim O’Brien and Al Torrisi, as well as the tireless dedication of board member Karen McFarlane. Thanks to their collective efforts, five Notre Dame students were able to participate in projects in this community. Meghan Ditsworth ’08 and Dennis Rankin ’09 served at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence. Thanks go to Raquel Nova Rosario and Manny Ayala for coordination of their programs. Libby Bierman ’10, Robbie Singer ’10 and Boston-area ND student. Elizabeth O’Hare ’08 worked at Lazarus House in Lawrence. Thanks to Bridget Shaheen and Mary Schank at Lazarus House for their continued contributions to making these successful SSLPs. Thanks also go to Lawrence native Mike Morris who helped coordinate the projects and enabled the students to serve part time at Central Catholic High School. Our gratitude goes to housing hosts Brother Rene Roy at Marist House and Lynne Sullivan of Lawrence. Many Boston-area alumni offered their time or homes, or showed generosity in many ways. This kindness was greatly appreciated by the students and the Club, and has helped make the program a continued success. All of the students thoroughly enjoyed their learning programs and were able to positively impact our local communities |
